city. Here you can read about your possibilities,
what you can see and experience.
Nollendorfplatz
|
Berlin
is divided into many districts, and most of them have
their own centre and main street. The Centre of Berlin
consists of the following 8 districs: Schöneberg,
Charlottenburg , Wilmersdorf, Mitte, Kreutzberg, Neukölln,
Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain. Fuggerstrasse and
Nollendorfplatz are in Schöneberg district.
Public
transportation in Berlin is very good, and you can
easily explore the city by using U- and S-bahn, trams
and buses. Public transport is available 24 hours,
but is limited between 01 and 04 at night (e.g. night
buses replace the U-bahn). A sightseeing boat trip
on one of Berlins many canals, is highly recommended.

Berlin
has recently become one of Europe's most important tourist
destinations, with only London and Paris receiving more
visitors per year.
Despite
the many visitors in Berlin, you don't have the feeling
of being in a tourist trap. The city is large, spanning
60 km from North to South, and 60km East to West.
This makes Berlin quiet and peaceful, even with its
3.5 million inhabitants.
Wide
pavements, green trees, parks and bicycle lanes create
the dominant picture of the city. Biking in Berlin
is a nice, safe, way of seeing all the city has to
offer. Bikes can be rented from several places; the
most popular being Deutsche Bahn Rental Bikes which
are placed strategically throughout city.

Nollendorfplatz

Fuggerstrasse
is a good area with easy access to all districts and
to many of Berlins places of interest. Nollendorfplatz
is only 5 minutes away with several U-bahn and bus lines.
Along Massenstrasse, a few meters up the street from
Nollendorfplatz, you will find bars, cafes, restaurants,
and Winterfeldt Platzt with its brisk market on Saturdays
and Wednesdays.
The
U-bahn line, U2, from Nollendorfplatz, takes you directly
to Potsdamer Platz where you will find some of Europe's
biggest cinemas, casinos, restaurants and shopping
centres. The annual Berliner Film Festival takes place
on Potsdamer Platz in February.
Not
far from Potsdamer Platzt, you will find Branderburger
Tor, Unter den Linden, Reichstag and Friedrichstrasse
where Galleries
Lafayette is located.
Nostalgia
and history at Alexanderplatz
Karl
Marx Allee/
Frankfurter Allee
|
U2
takes you directly to Alexanderplatz with its famous
TV-tower, and the center of the former East Berlin.
Here you will get a strong feeling of being back in
GDR time.
The
Musemsinsel is close to Alexanderplatz where some
of Berlin's most important museums are located, such
as the Pergamon, Old National Gallery, Lustgarten
and the Old Museum which houses the bust of the world
famous Egyptian Queen Nefertiti. With over 160 museums
in Berlin, you will not be bored.
From
Alexanderplatz, it is only a short walk to Karl Marx
Aleé, which was the official parade street
of East Berlin. Here you will get the feeling of being
back in the Soviet Union and Moscow, with enormous
and monumental buildings, all built in Soviet style.
In former times, if an East German wanted an apartment,
they would have to participate in its construction,
and be a member of the Communist Party.
Cool
and alternative Friedrichshain and Kreutzberg
Boxhagenerplatz
|
Karl
Marx Alleé changes its name to Frankfurter Alleé
when it reaches Friedrichshain, the smallest and according
to many, the nicest district in town. Look for Simon
Dachstrasse where you will find many shops, cafés,
bars and interesting venues for food and drink. During
the weekend the popular market at Boxhagener Platz is
worth a visit; Saturdays are for food and vegetables
and there is a flea market on Sundays, all year long.
From
Nolledorfplatz you can take the U1 directly to Friedrichshain
and to Warschauerstrasse. On the way you will cross
Kreutzberg, a colourful district known for the large
numbers of international artists, musicians, and Turks
who live here. Here you will also find many alternative
and interesting bars, cafés, shops and artist
studios.
From
Kreutzberg to Friedrichshain you can cross the river
Spree by foot, or take the U-bahn crossing Oberbaumbrücke.
The Oberbaumbrucke bridge provides a stunning view
over the Spree river and Berlin's "skyline".
The
Berlin Wall
East
Side Gallery
|
At
Warschauerstrasse, which is the last stop on U1, right
at Oberbaumbrücke, you will find East Side Gallery.
This is the last remaining 500m of the old Berlin Wall.
After the wall came down, this part was kept and decorated
by artists. Notably, this is the only place in Berlin
where the wall went along a trafficked street, where
cars were allowed but not pedestrians. Cars were not
allowed to stop here, and guards were posted all along
the street. Today you can walk from Warschauerstrasse
to Ostbahnhof along the wall.
Shopping
and zoo around the corner
Tiergarten
|
From
Fuggerstrasse it takes about 10 minutes to walk to KaDeWe
and Kurfürstendamm. KaDeWe is one of the biggest
and best department stores in Europe. Kurfürstendamm
was the main street in former West Berlin, and here
you will find a busy street with everything from exclusive
boutiques to high-street shops. Wilmersdorferstrasse
is another good shopping street which runs across Kurfürstendamm.
Berlin Zoo and aquarium are close to Kurfürstendamm.
The
biggest park in Berlin is Tiergarten. The park is
worth a visit, and can be reached by bus number 187
from Nollendorfplatz. Taking the bus to the stop called
"Nordische
Botschaften" at Tiergarten, you can also
visit the common embassy for the nordic countries,
which is unique in architecture and style.

Siegessäule
|
In
the center of Tiergarten you will find Siegessäule,
called Gold Else among Berlin people. On the weekends
there is a popular antique and flea market on the
street called "17. Juni". There are of course
many meadows, canals, woods, rosegardens and benches
where you can enjoy the silence and the park.
From
palaces to lakes
In Charlottenburg, you will find Schloss Charlottenburg,
where the wife of Fredrik the Great, Sophie Charlotte
lived. Fredrik the Great lived in Potsdam, at the
palace of Sanssouci.
There is an S-bahn connection to Potsdam, and will
take 30 - 40 minutes from Nollendorfplatz.
If
you visit Berlin during the summer, you can visit
some of the many lakes and beaches around the city,
like at Strandbad Wannsee or Strandbad Müggelsee.
More information here.
We
wish you a warm welcome in Berlin, one of Europe's
most visited and exciting cities.
